No spoilers here, however...

'Turn Left' was so amazing! I really want to watch 'The Stolen Earth' right this second, but Sarah has (wisely) convinced me that we should wait until the end of the week when the season finale comes out so that we can watch both parts together. It makes me sad to wait. But after due consideration, it's probably for the best.

Hey, is it normal to get random crazy bots IMing you the instant you make an LJ post?

Let's find out.

EDIT! Apparently, yes. For goddamn months. I happened to get two at once, though, so I'm guessing the people behind this bot aren't the same.

Removing my AIM from my profile now.

Here's two from my front yard from today. I don't usually screw with the color of macro shots this much, but I thought it brought out more detail.

Mike Tyson's Jungle Beat [Jun. 30th, 2008|10:59 am]

apm
Hey, so I hacked a NES emulator for the Wii to play Mike Tyson's Punch-Out using the Gamecube bongos.

It works surprisingly well! Much better than the Power Glove ever did. If you have a Wii and a pair of Gamecube bongos, I highly recommend trying it out.

Here's an embarrassing YouTube video demonstration / infomercial:

Apparently when you have a baby you decide that the two funniest things in the world are putting random things into your mouth and making stupid faces.

[As an aside: iMovie is terrible. It's unbearably slow to do anything (clicking on the "capture from live camera" icon locks the program up for like five minutes before it even brings up the preview window, and then who knows how long it will take from the time you hit "record" to when it actually gets around to recording) and I could never get a proper preview with sound for some reason. So, yes, I know that the video would be a lot better with tighter editing; I just couldn't stand to work in that fucking program any longer.]

If you have any further ideas for NES games that could be played with bongos, I'm interested in hearing them.

A win is a win, right? [Jun. 29th, 2008|08:26 am]

[Current Mood |happy yet befuddled]

So the Dodgers did something last night that has only ever been done five times before. They won a game without getting a hit. The game wasn't an 'official' no hitter for Jered Weaver and the Angels -- apparently it can't be official unless circumstances require that the bottom of the ninth inning be played. But it was a no hitter nonetheless. The Dodgers scored one run on no hits, while two Angel errors allowed for the scoring.

This, it seems to me, sums up the Dodger's 2008 season so far. They are a team that has been plagued by injuries, that has no offense, that is four games below .500. And yet they're also a team that is only two and a half games out of first place. It says something, I think, about the degree to which the NL West in underachieving. But it also says something about the kind of strange luck the Dodgers have had this year.

I would like to give props to Chad Billingsley, who shut out the Angels over his seven inning start and pretty much allowed the Dodgers to win in such a pathetic manner. But I'd like to make a request of the Dodgers, too: for the future, guys, when you get the urge to do something that makes history, make sure that its the good kind of history you're making. Because any more of this would really suck.

Stanford/Nokia study on kids, communication, and technology -- seeking participants! [Jun. 29th, 2008|01:48 am]

chimerically
[Tags|, , ]

As some of you know, I am interning this summer with the IDEA team at Nokia Research Center in Palo Alto, where we working on a research project focused on children, families, and communication. We are looking for participants for a study that will take place this summer, and would greatly appreciate your help. Please share the following message with friends, organizations, mailing lists, bulletin boards, or anyone who may be interested. Thank you!

--------------------------------------

Dear Parents,

As a part of a project with Stanford University and Nokia Research Center, we are studying how families with kids in early elementary school communicate, both with one another and with remote family members, and how technologies and kids' toys are a part of this. For help with our research, we are looking to hear from the perspective of families with children aged 5-9 years.

We ultimately hope to develop age-appropriate technologies to help children develop and maintain relationships with loved ones (e.g. grandparents, parents, siblings, and friends).

The time commitment required for participation is typically an afternoon or evening. We would like to interview and observe you and your family in your home in order to understand the methods your family uses to communicate and what values you have around the toys and technologies in your lives. Your child(ren) can also give us a "tour" of their toys and explain to us their thoughts on family and their favorite activities.

As a thank-you for participation, your family will receive a $100 gift certificate. You will also be invited to participate in a design workshop at Nokia Research Center in Palo Alto.

We are flexible with scheduling and will work around what is convenient for you.

If you are willing to participate or have any questions about this research, please contact me by email (kids_study@morganya.org) or phone at (510)387-2023.

Thanks,
Morgan Ames

We fought the rain (and the rain won) [Jun. 28th, 2008|12:50 pm]

wadam
[info]uutyper and I rented a costume and everything. Then we got to shooting this morning, only to find out ... that it was raining. So we made do. We took some shots indoors at the Fountain Square Mall. Then we took some shots outside when it started to clear up. All in all, I don't think that the results were great. But considering the weather, and considering that I've had more than a month's layoff from photographing people, there were definitely some keepers.

Stress, or the alleviation thereof. [Jun. 27th, 2008|04:20 pm]

wadam
I just finished my second to last book review of the summer. It doesn't seem like a big deal, but with injuring my knee, then going to Philadelphia, it has been a major source of concern for me for the past few weeks. This means that I now have some time to relax and unwind a bit before I go on to write one more.

I would still like to be able to revise at least one conference paper for publication this summer, but it might have to wait until after I move to Philly.

Worse Air [Jun. 27th, 2008|12:07 pm]

You know how I was speculating how bad it was in Redding in my last post?

My friend Linda Raven Moore lives up Weaverville way. For those of you not in the know, Weaverville’s in the mountains west of Redding. It’s the county seat of Trinity County, which is the most rural county in the state. A large chunk of Trinity County is the Trinity Alps Wilderness, a stretch of land that has been left to be natural — there aren’t even roads through it. (All firefighting in the Wilderness has to be done by hand tools, that’s how strict they are about it.)

Needless to say, Trinity County is on fire at the moment. This is about what it looked like a day or so ago:

Linda’s got more pictures at her blog entries on the subject: Smoky Weaverville and Smoky Ride. They’re worth the time to look at all her pictures.

Actually, Linda’s blogs are worth the time in general. She’s got four of them: Raven’s Roads, her travel blog, Raven’s Rides, her motorcycle blog, Raven’s RV, about life in a motor home, and Raven’s Range, the general catchall blog. She’s a good writer, and a master of the photoessay. Check it out!

(In comments, my friend David says that things are clearing out a bit. It’s more smoky in Sacramento today. I’m staying in as much as possible.)

Bad Air. [Jun. 26th, 2008|07:53 pm]

bad air

It’s ugly out there. This is a picture I just took about fifteen minutes ago, as the sun was going down here in Antelope, which is roughly twenty miles northeast of Sacramento proper. (I’m near Roseville, for those familiar with Sactown geography.)

The air’s been nasty all day. Every night, we hope it’ll get better as it clears enough to see stars in the sky. But the daytimes are just nasty. I had to take my mom into Roseville this afternoon, and our car doesn’t have air conditioning. My lungs are still feeling it. Every time I step out into the murky, ugly air, it starts to hurt to breathe. And I’m not in any sensitive group.

I’m in Sacramento. I can only imagine how bad it is in my old stomping grounds up in Redding, where there’s fires burning all around. I have vague memories of 1987, and stepping outside to see a blood red sun hanging in the air. My dad still has pictures somewhere.

Never expected I’d be snapping my own in Sactown, though.

A thousand fires. My lovely state is burning. And more dry lightning predicted.

And it’s only June.

That’s the scariest part.

(More sunset pictures on Flicker here.)
